Decolonizing Education

It's time to bring two-eyed seeing to the Canadian education system

Why it's important

Education is one of the tools used to instill cultural values and attitudes in people the dominant culture in the area thinks is important to pass on.

The Colonial Model

The roots of the current colonial model are in the Industrial Revolution; you can still see this in how the education system is structured. Currently, the focus of this education model is developing skills that are useful in a workplace environment through classroom instruction.

The Indigenous Model

Indigenous education is a lifelong process focusing on the spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional development of each individual through experiences and collaboration.

Bringing them together

Two-Eyed Seeing will help students learn through both an Indigenous lens and a colonial lens, and how both worldviews can work together to create a holistic understanding of the world around them.

Learning from educational materials

Resources exist for both Indigenous and colonial education models.

Learning from teachers

Teachers are the best source for the reality of how the current education system is working.

Putting it all together

Two eyed seeing education helps prepare students to collaborate and solve problems to create lasting, equitable solutions.
